You will have a problem with this game, althought it is easily fixed. When this pops up:
16 bit Windows Subsystem C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for funning MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
If you just move the COMMDLG.DLL file to a folder on the desktop. This easily fixes the problem, Microsoft took this Dll file out of the system when they stopped making windows 3.1, they are just trying to make it harder on everyone.

This did not work for me either, I would reaaaaallllly like to play this classic!
Looks like you have to set the compatibility (right-click CASTLE1.EXE/CASTLE2.EXE) to Windows 95, that will help sometimes. Also, you should be able to select another AUTOEXEC and/or CONFIG file, maybe you need to write them yourself. Call them AUTOEXEC.DOS.BAT and CONIFG.DOS.SYS or something clear like that. The syntax is the same as the old DOS AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files, but most files (HIMEM.SYS etc.) are in another location and/or not available. In the last case you can try copying them from a DOS _or_ WIN95 _or_ WIN98 _or_ WIN98SE installation. Do NOT mix them, that's a guarantee for problems.
The best solution is, however, to make a dual-boot or even a seperate (old/obsolete) system. A Virtual Machine (VMWare, BOCHS/Plex86, VirtualPC, etc.) running DOS and WIN3.x will also suffice, or even a VM running WIN9x, but i don't recommend the last solution as it tends to be very slow when emulated/vitualised.
If you still have problems or questions, post a reply here and mail me at ebogeholt@zonnet.nl to point me to it. This way we can share the discussion with everybody :)
Actually the "missing" file should still exist in the C: \ WINDOWS \ repair folder. Just copy the first file listed, autoexec.net, into the folder C: \ WINDOWS \ system32. Apparently other programs besides CoW suffer from this same incompatability problem. I hope this saves somebody the headache I had.
I was just wondering if the problem could be wrong with your version of the game. I've got XP and it works fine on mine. Try the downloads from http://liberatedgames.org/
I know I probably sound like I'm trying to plug the site now that I've mentioned it in two posts less than three minuets in between but I found it a really good site for getting Castle of the Winds.
